Morristown, with a population of over 28,000 and a total county population of 60,000, is located in the beautiful mountains of East Tennessee, bounded on the north by Clinch Mountain and on the southeast by the Great Smoky Mountains. The valley is also bounded on the north by Cherokee Lake and on the south by Douglas Lake, both upper reservoirs of the Tennessee Valley Authority System. There are over 118 churches representing 25 denominations in the city and county. Morristown has a mild climate with an average summer temperature of 77.2 degrees and a winter average of 42.0 degrees. A consolidated school system of 13 elementary schools, four middle schools, two high schools and one special education center serves over 10,000 students. In addition to the public school system, there are two private schools in Morristown. Walters State Community College is located in Morristown and serves an 11-county area of Tennessee. There is also a state area vocational school, a business and secretarial school and beauty culture school. Several institutes of higher learning are located in Knoxville, including the main campus of the University of Tennessee and the School of Veterinary Medicine. The East Tennessee State University Quillen School of Medicine is located in Johnson County, 60 miles northeast of Morristown, along with East Tennessee State University.
