Job Description

The Department of Pathology in the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson announces a faculty position opening for academic physician to lead the Division of Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine at Banner University Medical Center Tucson (BUMCT). The academic rank (assistant professor, associate professor, or professor) and salary will depend on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

The Faculty of the Department of Pathology plays a key role in supporting the mission of the College of Medicine to bring about better health and improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases for the people of Arizona and beyond through education, research, and patient care.

The successful candidate will combine teaching and clinical activities and provide leadership in all aspects of the Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine Service at BUMCT. BUMCT is a 463-bed general medical and surgical facility with more than 25,000 admissions, 70,000 ED visits, and 14,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries on an annual basis. BUMCT is a level 1 trauma center and is also home to the NCI-designated Cancer Center, which performs cutting edge research and patient care, including bone marrow and stem cell transplantations. BUMCT also performs solid organ transplants including heart, lung, kidney, kidney/pancreas and liver.

In addition, assisting in other diagnostic areas of Clinical Pathology, such as signing out serum protein electrophoresis, immunofixation, and other pertinent laboratory tests is desired. The successful candidate will lead the blood bank/transfusion medicine rotation for pathology residents and share other teaching responsibilities with the rest of the Clinical Pathology faculty. The ideal candidate, therefore, should have strong clinical and analytical skills as well as excellent communication, organization, interpersonal, leadership, and teaching skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD/DO
  • Board Certified/Eligible in Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine
  • Board Certified in Anatomic or Clinical Pathology
  • Hold or be eligible for State of Arizona Medical License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years clinical practice experience in the fields of transfusion medicine/blood banking (preferred) and other areas of clinical pathology.
  • Track record of academic accomplishments including peer-reviewed publications and interest in teaching.
  • Established expertise in working with diverse patient populations

Work Schedule

  • M-F
  • Shared call rotation, can be taken from home but may require coming to the hospital to review peripheral blood smears/body fluids, flow cytometry
