Nestled among the hills and valleys of western Kentucky’s coal field region lies Muhlenberg County. Formed in 1798 from the neighboring counties of Logan and Christian, Muhlenberg County was named after General John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg, a clergyman, a soldier, and a politician of the Colonial, Revolutionary, and Post-Revolutionary eras.
The county seat is Greenville where one of the most beautiful courthouses in the state is located. Built in 1907 the courthouse was and still is the focal point of downtown Greenville. The county has a total land area of 1230 km and 12 km of water with the two primary geographic features being the Green River and Lake Malone. Muhlenberg County and the Green River will forever be linked in the minds of many by the John Prine song called "Paradise" about a now defunct coal mining town in Muhlenberg County.
Welcome to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky – so much to see, so much to do, and so much to offer – a wonderful place to live, work, and play!
