Carbon County covers 1,476 square miles and received its name from the vast amount of coal found in the region. Coal mining became the major catalyst for development in the county, and is home to the famous “world’s tallest coal miner,” located in the town of Helper. The city of Price enjoys an enviable climate, with mild winters and low humidity year round. With easy access to both I-15 and I-70, the cities of Provo and Salt Lake City are both within easy driving distance.

There are seven elementary schools in the Carbon area, along with five secondary schools creating a solid core education for our local youth. Carbon School District offers high school students the opportunity to work towards an associate degree while completing high school requirements through concurrent enrollment. Price is also the home of USU Eastern, a local community college, which has now merged with Utah State University. The new affiliation allows them to retain the mission of a community college including keeping their traditional low tuition with the added benefits of an affiliation with a world-renowned university.
The Castle Country area has several locally owned and operated dining facilities that are enjoyed by locals and tourists daily, including Balance Rock Eatery, Groggs Brewery, Carbon Country Club, The Cowboy Kitchen and Sherald’s Drive Up Diner.

There are numerous celebrations and festivals throughout the year, including a Greek Festival, a St. Patrick’s Day parade, and Christmas celebration parade, as well as international days, art festivals, rodeos, stock car racing, mountain bike festivals and more.

Recreation

This section of Eastern Utah offers wonderful geological treasures and recreational opportunities, such as fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, water sports and rafting. For the avid golfers, Carbon Country Club is a public, 18-hole championship course.

Eastern Utah is also home to numerous historical sightings. Deep in the heart of dinosaur country, more whole dinosaur skeletons have been uncovered at Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry than any other site in the world. Price is home to a Prehistoric Museum, which features one of the world’s best collections of dinosaur tracks, dinosaur skeletons, a rare dinosaur egg and a prehistoric Native-American exhibit. Nine Mile Canyon known as the “world’s longest art gallery,” features thousands of ancient pictograph and petroglyph drawings on canyon walls as well as remnants of Indian dwellings, wildlife viewing, hiking and biking trails, and more.

Further east, the Green River carves canyons through the desert and provides plenty of opportunities to test your whitewater rafting skills. Goblin Valley State Park is a paradise for photographers and one of Utah’s most popular state parks. To the south lies the northern portion of the San Rafael Swell with wonderful scenic drives and back country hiking and biking. To the west are the forested highlands of the Wasatch Plateau, with hiking, skiing and mountain biking in a cool alpine setting. The Castle Country area also presents a great opportunity to get out and ride your ATV in some of Utah’s most beautiful landscapes along numerous well-maintained trails throughout the Carbon and Emery county area.
