Job Summary:

Excellent opportunity for experienced surgeon that specializes in Trauma/Surgical Critical Care to join Level I Trauma Center at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Qualified Candidates:
  • Board eligible or board certified in Surgical Critical Care
  • Must have or be able to obtain active SC medical license prior to start
  • Employed position to join our existing team of surgeons and APPs in an HCA owned practice
  • Call requirements: there is a rotating weekly call schedule rotating between trauma, emergency general surgery and surgical ICU. When on a service week, there will be a 24 hour call expectation from Friday to Sunday covered by the 3 surgeons currently on service each covering a different 24 hour call day.  Off service attendings rotate to cover 12 hour night call from Monday to Thursday.
  • All the surgeons participate in accordance with the ACGME in teaching of surgical residents and rotating residents from other specialties.

About GSMC Trauma Center:
  • Grand Strand Medical Center (GSMC) proudly stands as one of the six Level I adult trauma centers in South Carolina and uniquely serves as the only Level II pediatric trauma center in Horry and Georgetown Counties. GSMC is a 403 bed Acute Care Hospital with 50 ICU beds and 8 PICU beds.  We serve 15 counties, 7 in South Carolina and 8 in North Carolina, and 28 EMS agencies, both ground and air rescue. We provide comprehensive 24/7 in-house coverage for trauma and emergency surgery at our facility
  • Our Acute Care Surgery team is dedicated to offering around-the-clock in-house coverage for all patients arriving at our emergency room, including all trauma activations, emergency general surgery cases, and inpatient surgical rescue needs. We also extend critical care coverage to all trauma and emergency general surgical patients, including consults from other service lines, within our specialized Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit. Our facility boasts a dedicated trauma room, an emergency general surgery room, and three full elective surgery days per week. Additionally, we are equipped with a fully functional hybrid room for eligible patients, and both our emergency general and elective surgery rooms have 24/7 access to the DaVinci robotic system.
  • We cater to adult and pediatric trauma patients, offering a full spectrum of patient care services with comprehensive support from subspecialty groups available 24/7. In 2024, our trauma service had a volume of 5,495 cases, with over 550 cases presenting with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) greater than 15. We experience an annual volume growth of approximately 8-10% year-over-year.
  • HCA has made a significant investment in the robotic system, and our goal within the ACS team is to ensure all our surgeons are trained in robotic surgery. Our emergency department features three dedicated trauma rooms—two for adults and one pediatric-ready—with a helipad conveniently located adjacent to the department.
  • Our team currently comprises seven full-time and one part-time acute care surgeons, supported by nine advanced practice providers and an additional APP available in the clinic Monday to Friday. We are privileged to participate in the training of a fully staffed general surgery residency and engage in trauma research and community outreach.
