Overview
Johnson Memorial Health (JMH) in Franklin, Indiana, seeks an exceptional provider for our new behavioral health unit opening in 2024. The Medical Director will oversee patient treatment plans, review medical records, participate in hospital committees, and represent the program to internal and external stakeholders. This role ensures behavioral health integration across the hospital and compliance with JCAHO, Medicare, and OSHA standards.
Supervisory Responsibility
Provides direction to clinical staff.
Position Type/Expected Hours
Full-time; schedule based on the 24/7 needs of the Program. Refer to hospital attendance policy for details.
Work Environment
NPs work closely with patients experiencing moderate to severe psychiatric or behavioral issues, with potential exposure to violent behavior. The role involves use of medical and standard office equipment.
Qualifications and Core Functions
- Diagnose, treat, educate, and refer patients per hospital policy
- Coordinate care to increase census and manage costs
- Order and interpret lab/psychological tests
- Review medical histories and counsel patients/families
- Prescribe/administer medications and perform interventions
- Assist in emergencies and manage admissions/discharges
- Conduct physical exams and patient rounds
- Guide clinical staff and ensure quality care
- Participate in court proceedings as needed
- Help develop and implement clinical procedures
- Interpret patient needs to nonclinical staff
- Provide telemedicine and 24/7 on-call psychiatric coverage
- Participate in Medicare/Medicaid and third-party payer programs
- Uphold patient dignity, privacy, and ethical standards
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies
- Complete timely documentation (records, charts, notes, etc.)
- Adhere to hospital bylaws, policies, and therapeutic standards
- Assist with seclusion/restraint procedures and suicide precautions
- Maintain safety, hygiene, and infection control standards
- Complete required competencies and renew licenses on time
- Participate in psychotherapy and educational seminars
- Maintain and evaluate equipment
- Provide feedback to leadership and audit charts
- Mentor new staff and perform other duties as assigned
Job Specifications
Doctoral degree with active, unrestricted state license required. Board-certified Psychiatrist preferred. Master’s degree (minimum two years post-bachelor’s) also acceptable. Must hold a current DEA license and not be a sanctioned provider. Requires a minimum of five years of clinical behavioral health experience and five years in hospital administration. Must have knowledge of state and federal health insurance regulations and experience with geriatric, adult, and/or adolescent populations. Willingness to obtain required hospital credentials is essential.
Language Skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read and write complex clinical documentation and effectively present information to leadership, staff, and families.

Johnson Memorial Health, a county-owned facility in Franklin, Indiana, has served Johnson County since 1947. With 125 staffed beds, JMH offers specialized services including cancer care, orthopedics, cardiovascular testing, sleep center, wound care, diabetes care, acute rehab, ENT, and dialysis. JMH is a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, giving patients access to Mayo Clinic expertise at no extra cost. In 2012, JMH completed a $12.5 million surgical unit expansion. In 2024, it will open a 29-bed inpatient behavioral health hospital.

About Johnson Memorial Health
Johnson Memorial Health is county-owned and has served the citizens of Johnson County immediately south of Indianapolis since 1947. With just over 100 staffed beds the hospital has a number of specialty programs. Among them are a comprehensive cancer services, breast center, cath and peripheral vascular lab, cardiovascular testing center, sleep center, wound care center, diabetes care program, acute rehabilitation center, spine surgery, orthopedic and sports medicine services, ENT services, critical and progressive care units and a renal dialysis service on the JMH campus.
Johnson Memorial Health maintains a 12-bed Maternity Center built entirely on the LDRP concept. The Unit also has a special procedures room where all C-sections are performed. Patients and the medical staff have access to 24-7 anesthesia coverage and the unit staffs a level 1 nursery. The hospital maintains a close relationship with Riley Children’s Hospital which is utilized for newborn critical care transfers. The transfer rate over the past five years as ranged from a low of 1% to a high of 3.5% of all births. Over the last five years the Unit has averaged 500 births per year and that volume is growing.
The hospital completed a $12.5 million expansion and modernization of the surgery unit in 2012.
In 2010 Johnson Memorial Health entered into a clinical collaboration agreement with Community Health Network in Indianapolis. The agreement sets up a system for JMH and the CHN to pool resources and market strength to jointly develop new programs and services in the Johnson County market. The agreement has no effect on the hospital’s ownership or management, as it will remain a county-owned hospital, directed by its own board of trustees and administrative team.
