Summary:

Provides special expertise in the performance of immunohistochemical stains. Performs the preparation of pathology and laboratory specimens for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist through the use of microtomy, special staining, and histochemistry techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Devises and directs the performance of routine, special stains, and immunohistochemical staining to provide appropriate slides for the microscopic evaluation of tissues, fluids, and other Anatomic Pathology specimens.
  • Performs / assists with frozen section staining, and fine needle aspirations.
  • Operates microtomes, embedding stations, tissue processors, staining equipment, coverslippers, and other AP equipment to provide quality slides for pathology examinations.
  • Maintains instruments per vendor recommendations, updates policy and procedures as needed.
  • Performs analysis and records QC according to policy and procedures following regulatory guidelines.
  • Handles specimens after specific safety training for laboratory infectious specimens.
  • Follows established protocols for safety, infection control, security, compliance, and the use of hazardous materials.

Job Requirements:

Education/Skills

  • Associate of Science Degree required.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree preferred.
  • Basic knowledge in the areas of pathology/immunohistochemistry required.

Experience

  • 1-3 years of experience in pathology/immunohistochemistry setting required.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histologic Tech (HT) certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) is required within 1 year.
