Requirements:
- Must have extensive knowledge of respiratory therapy, gained through completing an NBRC-approved and accredited program, plus one year of clinical experience under medical supervision.
- Must hold current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification and state licensure for a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
Responsibilities:
- Initiates, monitors, and maintains life support systems for skilled nursing facility residents.
- Performs airway care and maintenance.
- Manages artificial ventilator status per protocol.
- Maintains and troubleshoots mechanical ventilators.
- Participates in CPR procedures, including bag ventilation and chest compressions.
- Initiates, monitors, and documents various respiratory care modalities.
- Assesses residents’ cardiopulmonary status using physical exams, history, lab results, chest radiology, pulmonary function tests, and professional judgment to create a respiratory care plan per physician's order.
- Performs various tasks prior to treating a resident as follows:
- Verify physician’s orders for completeness.
- Ensure orders include diagnosis, ICD-10 code, therapy type and duration, medication type and dosage, FIO2, and frequency.
- Review resident’s chart for history and precautions.
- Chart pulse, respiration, breath sounds, and general appearance.
- Notify supervisor of new starts and discontinued residents.
- Administers respiratory care:
- Dispenses medication and adjusts devices for optimal therapy.
- Uses equipment like masks, mouthpieces, and Trach for resident comfort.
- Regulates equipment flow and pressure.
- Monitors and charts respiratory rate, pulse, breath sounds, medication reaction, and therapy difficulties.
- Communicates pertinent information to the resident's nurse and ensures accurate charting.
- Inspects, tests, cleans, reassembles, and maintains equipment. Keeps adequate supplies and handles administrative duties and proper disposal of equipment.
- Assists in emergency CPR as part of the emergency team; must be CPR certified.
- Administers and documents therapy modalities per departmental procedure and physician orders, including:
- Intermittent positive pressure breathing.
- Handheld nebulizer.
- Chest physical therapy (percussion, vibration, breathing and cough retraining, deep tracheal suctioning, incentive spirometry, sputum induction).
- Recognizes and addresses adverse reactions to therapy.
- Documents all resident care services in the medical record.
- Accepts and transcribes verbal orders for respiratory care.
- Sets up, maintains, and logs oxygen and respiratory supplies and equipment.
- Instructs residents and families on respiratory procedures to ensure cooperation and effective treatment, aiming for maximum rehabilitation.
- Attends educational programs and reads professional journals to maintain and enhance skills.
- Participates in interdisciplinary rounds and conferences to plan and evaluate resident care.
- Participates in quality assurance data collection.
- Ensures effective rehab service delivery, adherence to care plans, schedules, and timely documentation.
- Troubleshoots and maintains diagnostic equipment, ensuring accuracy through quality control and preventive maintenance.
