Requirements

  • Graduate of an NBRC‑approved and accredited respiratory therapy program.
  • Minimum one year clinical experience under medical supervision.
  • Current state licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/CPR) certification.

Core Responsibilities

  • Initiate, monitor, maintain, and document respiratory care and life‑support systems for skilled nursing facility residents per physician orders and facility protocols.
  • Assess cardiopulmonary status using history, physical exam, lab results, chest radiology, and pulmonary function data to develop and implement respiratory care plans.
  • Verify physician orders for completeness (diagnosis, ICD‑10 code, therapy type/duration, medications/dosage, FiO2, frequency) and review resident chart for relevant history/precautions.
  • Provide airway care and maintenance, including tracheostomy care and deep suctioning.
  • Manage artificial ventilation: initiate per protocol, monitor ventilator status, troubleshoot and maintain mechanical ventilators, and document changes.
  • Perform and document respiratory modalities, including:
    • Intermittent positive pressure breathing
    • Handheld nebulizer therapy
    • Chest physiotherapy (percussion, vibration, breathing and cough retraining)
    • Incentive spirometry and sputum induction
  • Administer respiratory medications and adjust delivery devices (masks, mouthpieces, tracheostomy interfaces); regulate flow and pressure to optimize therapy.
  • Monitor and chart vital signs and respiratory parameters (respiratory rate, pulse, breath sounds), therapy response, and adverse reactions; communicate pertinent information to nursing staff and ensure accurate medical record documentation.
  • Participate in emergency response and CPR (bag ventilation, chest compressions) as part of the emergency team.
  • Maintain, test, clean, and reassemble respiratory equipment; perform preventive maintenance and quality control checks; keep supply inventories and logs.
  • Accept and transcribe verbal orders for respiratory care as required.
  • Instruct residents and families on respiratory procedures and equipment to promote cooperation and rehabilitation.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, conferences, educational programs, quality assurance data collection, and other assigned duties to ensure effective service delivery and timely documentation.
