About the Community: The Santa Fe Service Unit serves eight sovereign tribal governments: the Pueblos of Cochiti, Nambe, Ohkay Owingeh, Pojoaque, San Felipe, San Ildefonso, Santa Clara, and Tesuque. Each community has unique health priorities, traditions, and expectations. Three tribes—Santa Clara, Cochiti, and San Felipe—operate community-based field clinics, increasing access to essential primary and specialty care.Key ResponsibilitiesThe Clinical Optometrist will provide comprehensive and patient-centered eye care services, including:
- Performing complete eye examinations and diagnosing a broad spectrum of visual and ocular conditions
- Providing emergency outpatient eye care, including treatment of trauma and acute pathology
- Managing ocular disease using topical and oral therapeutic agents
- Performing minor surgical procedures (e.g., anterior segment foreign body removal, corneal debridement, suture removal)
- Diagnosing and managing complex ocular pathology, including diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma
- Coordinating care with internal medicine, endocrinology, and other specialties for systemic diseases affecting vision
- Participating in inpatient consultations and serving as a referral resource for complex cases
- Supervising and directing optometric technicians
- Conducting mandated screenings (e.g., diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma)
- Utilizing laboratory and radiology services to support ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment
- Providing specialty clinics as needed (e.g., low vision, contact lenses, geriatric and special needs patients)
- Delivering care across multiple settings, including clinics, schools, homes, and community sites within the Santa Fe Service Indian Health Center (SFIHC)
- Maintaining thorough, timely, and accurate documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in compliance with HIPAA and SFIHC policies
- Supporting quality assurance and improvement initiatives, including chart audits and clinical reviews
- Coordinating referrals and external care through Patient and Referred Care (PRC), including urgent transport when needed
Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited institution
- Active, unrestricted U.S. optometry license
- Active, unrestricted DEA registration
- No lapse in clinical practice greater than six months
- Clean background and ability to pass Level I and Level II background checks
- Clinical experience with both pediatric and geriatric populations
- Demonstrated experience in multidisciplinary teams, rural health, Indian Health Service, or underserved community settings
- Residency training and/or prior experience in IHS or equivalent community health environments (required)
- Extensive experience managing chronic ocular conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma
- Familiarity with EHR systems and quality improvement programs
- Ability to manage a high-volume, high-acuity patient population
Work Schedule
- Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
Clinic LocationsThe contractor will hold 8-hour clinics 2–3 days per month at:
- Santa Clara Health Center
- San Felipe Health Center
- Cochiti Health Center
All remaining clinic days will be based at:
- Santa Fe Indian Health Center
Compensation
- $180/hour all-inclusive rate
- No housing or travel reimbursement
