Job Description

Tohono O’odham Nation Health Care – Sells Hospital / Health Center Sells, Arizona Compensation: $120/hour all‑inclusive (onsite housing provided; travel is provider‑covered) Contract Type: 1099 Independent Contractor Schedule: 24‑hour shifts, typically 3–4 consecutive shifts every other week

 

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join the Tohono O’odham Nation Health Care team in Sells, Arizona. This role offers a unique opportunity to practice full‑scope emergency medicine in a rural tribal community, providing meaningful care with a high level of autonomy while working alongside a supportive onsite EM physician.

This position is ideal for an APP who is confident in independent ED practice, enjoys procedural work, and values culturally sensitive, community‑focused care.

 

About the Facility

Sells Hospital serves as the central emergency and outpatient care hub for the Tohono O’odham Nation. The Emergency Department sees approximately 10,000 annual visits, generally lower acuity, creating a supportive environment for APPs who thrive in rural medicine and appreciate continuity with a close‑knit community.

 

Practice Environment

  • ED Volume: ~10,000 visits/year

  • APP Coverage: 1 PA/NP per 24‑hour shift

  • Physician Coverage: 24‑hour onsite EM physician

  • Nursing Support: 3 RNs per shift

  • Additional Support: 2 Medical Assistants per shift

  • Diagnostics: X‑ray, lab, and basic emergency ultrasound

  • Transfers: Established EMS pathways to regional referral hospitals

  • EHR: RPMS / IHS EHR

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently evaluate, diagnose, and manage emergency and urgent care patients across all age groups

  • Perform ED procedures including:

    • Laceration repair

    • Splinting and orthopedic care

    • Incision & drainage

    • Basic procedural sedation (if privileged)

  • Assist with stabilization of critical patients until physician management or transfer

  • Collaborate closely with the attending physician, nursing staff, and ancillary services

  • Document all encounters accurately and efficiently in the EHR

  • Adhere to TONHC, IHS, and Joint Commission standards of care

 

Qualifications

  • Active PA license with NCCPA certification or NP with national board certification (FNP, ENP, or ACNP preferred)

  • Minimum 2–3 years of emergency medicine experience required

  • Rural, tribal, or IHS experience strongly preferred

  • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS; ATLS preferred

  • Active and unrestricted medical license

  • Current DEA registration

  • Strong procedural competency appropriate for ED practice

  • Commitment to providing culturally sensitive care to Native American patients

 

Compensation & Contract Details

  • Rate: $120/hour all‑inclusive

  • Malpractice: Coverage provided

  • Contract Type: 1099 Independent Contractor
