Join a team providing primary care and ongoing medical management for offenders at two correctional facilities in North Carolina (Maury & Lumberton). This is a contract/locum opportunity with an immediate start and a 40-hour work week.

Required qualifications

  • Active NC NP or PA license
  • DEA registration
  • BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Board certified or board eligible (BC/BE)

What you’ll do

  • Collect vital signs and take thorough, relevant medical histories from patients.
  • Independently evaluate, diagnose, and treat acute and chronic illnesses, injuries, and trauma within your clinical scope and licensure.
  • Manage chronic conditions, monitor progress, and ensure continuity of care using evidence-based guidelines.
  • Prescribe appropriate medications—including controlled substances when indicated—following supervising physician protocols, DAC policy, and state/federal regulations.
  • Provide approved immunizations and preventive services according to facility protocols.
  • Educate and counsel patients on medications, treatment plans, nutrition, weight management, substance use, and disease prevention.
  • Refer complex cases to the supervising physician or clinical director when they exceed NP/PA scope.
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests such as labs, X-rays, EKGs, audiograms, and tympanometry to inform clinical decisions.
  • Conduct routine and comprehensive physical exams for diagnosis, intake assessments, and chronic disease follow-up.
  • Document all clinical encounters promptly and accurately in the HERO electronic medical record using the POMR format.
  • Follow the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act and all facility policies, participate in required reporting, quality assurance, utilization review, peer consultations, and other quality improvement activities.
