This is a high-impact clinical and physician leadership opportunity to guide cardiology services across a growing regional market within a large, integrated academic health system.

Position Overview

The Assistant Chief of Cardiology, Western Region will provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for cardiologists and advanced practice providers delivering cardiovascular care throughout the Western Region. This role combines active clinical practice with administrative leadership and reports directly to the System Chief of Cardiology, ensuring alignment with systemwide clinical, quality, operational, and financial priorities.

Clinical Environment

The Western Region is anchored at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center (CNRVMC), a 146-bed Level III, award-winning acute-care hospital providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular services across a large geographic footprint.

Key clinical capabilities include:

• Full-spectrum outpatient cardiology services
• Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography
• Nuclear cardiology
• Cardiac CT and Cardiac MRI
• Vascular imaging
• Exercise and pharmacologic stress testing
• High-volume device management program (pacemakers and ICDs), including remote monitoring
• Streamlined referral pathways to interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, heart failure, and advanced imaging programs

CNRVMC supports a 24/7 STEMI program and a cardiac catheterization laboratory performing over 1,000 cardiac catheterizations annually.

Leadership Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and oversight for cardiology practices in Christiansburg, Giles, Wytheville, Galax, and Hillsville
• Ensure seamless clinical operations, high-quality care, and excellent patient access across all sites
• Advance standardized care pathways and monitor key performance indicators
• Promote responsible resource utilization and value-based care
• Participate in strategic planning, recruitment, and program development
• Support sustainable growth of cardiovascular services throughout the Western Region

Candidate Profile & Qualifications

We seek a forward-thinking cardiology leader with strong clinical expertise, academic engagement, and demonstrated leadership ability.

Required qualifications include:

• MD or DO
• Board Certification in Cardiovascular Disease
• Minimum 10 years of cardiology practice experience
• Minimum 2–3 years of progressive leadership experience in an academic or complex clinical environment
• Academic rank of Associate Professor or higher
• Demonstrated excellence in communication, organizational leadership, and team development
• Experience building integrated clinical, education, and research programs
• Experience with graduate medical education preferred
