Job Description
The Department of Neurology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Altoona are seeking a faculty candidate in the Division of Vascular Neurology who will serve as a vascular neurologist on the UPMC Altoona campus under the leadership of Dr. Page B. Pennell, Chair of Neurology and Dr. Cynthia Kenmuir, Altoona Chief of Neurology and Director of Stroke. The faculty will also work closely in partnership with our Neuro Interventional team. Must have completed at least one year of vascular neurology fellowship. Must have an MD or equivalent and board certified/eligible in Neurology and Vascular Neurology with the ability to obtain an unrestricted PA license.
Key Highlights
- Become part of the vascular neurology division at UPMC Altoona campus, within the Department of Neurology, with 4 vascular neurology physicians that include 2 neurointerventionalists, 5 APPs and a dedicated clinic staff.
- Collaborate with a dedicated team of local and regional neurologists, neurointerventionalists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, Advanced Practice Providers, dedicated stroke nurses and social workers.

About The Department of Neurology and Vascular Neurology/Neurointerventional Division at the University of Pittsburgh & UPMC Altoona
- UPMC Altoona is a 400-bed regional healthcare system providing care to nearly 400,000 residents in central Pennsylvania.
- UPMC Altoona is a Joint Commission certified stroke center and has been performing Neurointerventional procedures since 2018.
- On the Altoona campus, there are clinical teaching opportunities with regularly rotating medical students for their required Neurology Clerkship and for Stroke/NIR electives from both Drexel and University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine.
- Clinical services span outpatient clinics, inpatient Vascular Neurology service and Neurointerventional services. A separate Neurohospitalist service covers general neurology consultations.
- Research conducted at the UPMC Altoona campus includes funded clinical trials in stroke with the goal of offering our patient population access to state-of-the-art care. These trials include drug and device trials.
- Research funding for clinical, basic, data science, and translational studies in the UPMC Neurology department has increased steadily and in FY25 the department received over $25 million in research support.
- The Department of Neurology was awarded the NINDS UE5 to support research training of residents and fellows, “Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Neuropathology Pittsburgh Research Education Plan (N3-PREP)” and is also part of the NINDS Network for Excellence in Neuroscience Clinical Trials (NeuroNEXT).
