UPMC Altoona is seeking a BE/BC General Surgeon with BE/BC Surgical Critical Care to join our Trauma/EGS team. This is an opportunity to practice acute care surgery in a high impact regional program where the in-house trauma/EGS surgeon serves as a central clinical leader. 


  • UPMC Altoona serves as a vital regional community hospital caring for >1200 trauma patients and performing > 800 Emergency General Surgical operations per year. We manage trauma and acute surgical emergencies including biliary disease, bowel obstruction/perforation, diverticulitis, appendicitis age 12+, soft tissue infections, and other urgent general surgical conditions. 


  • At UPMC Altoona, you will matter. The in-house trauma/EGS surgeon is a central resource for the ED, medical staff, EMS, hospital leadership, and surrounding community. You will join a tight-knit group of experienced trauma, surgical critical care, and EGS physicians supported by an experienced Trauma Medical Director, hospital Trauma Program Manager, dedicated PI and registry team, outreach coordinator, and seasoned trauma APPs as well as the ARHS Administrative Manager and team.


  • We provide 24/7 in-house trauma/EGS coverage with backup call. Most trauma patients are admitted. Patients requiring Level I resources are rapidly stabilized and transferred to a quaternary trauma center, with on-site aeromedical transport available. We maintain strong regional EMS partnerships and serve as a referral center for EGS transfers from surrounding hospitals. 

Clinical and Program Highlights 

  • Established Level III trauma program with strong institutional and medical staff support 
  • > 1,200 trauma patients and >800 emergency general surgery cases annually 
  • Opportunities for active involvement in trauma performance improvement, outreach, program development, and medical student education 


  • Qualifications:
  • Required-
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in General Surgery
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Surgical Critical Care
  • Eligibility for PA licensure
  • A commitment to patient-centered care and excellent interpersonal skills are essential, as we prioritize delivering the highest quality care in a compassionate, professional environment.
  • Preferred-
  • Experience or interest in Level 3 trauma, Trauma PI, EMS collaboration, regional trauma systems, community hospital acute care surgery, and medical student education.
