Overview
Join a busy inpatient cardiac/thoracic team in Redding, CA on a locum tenens basis covering clinical duties and call to fill gaps in coverage. You’ll work varied day shifts (typically 7a–5p onsite), take night call (5p–7a) with beeper coverage, and occasionally cover weekends. Travel, lodging, and malpractice insurance are provided.

Typical workload

• Adult patients only
• Less than 10 inpatients on average
• Up to 6 clinic patients on Tuesdays and Thursdays
• Rounding and post-op note documentation expected
• Admissions handled by surgeons; you’ll manage post-op care and follow-up
• Case mix: cardiac and thoracic surgical patients

Schedule and call

• Day shifts: varied days, generally 7a–5p onsite
• Night call: 5p–7a (beeper); callback rate is low (about 1–2 calls per night on average)
• Participate in night call following onsite shifts; occasional urgent evaluations outside clinic times

Facility and tools

• Trauma Level II facility
• EMR: Cerner Care B with SurgiNet
• EVH system available: Maquet Hemopro 2

Qualifications and requirements

• Physician Assistant, board certified
• Active California medical license and DEA registration
• ACLS and BLS required
• Recent, substantial cardiovascular surgical assist experience required, including Endovascular Vein Harvesting (EVH) with the Maquet Hemopro 2
• Clean malpractice history
• Must be on active, unrestricted staff at a TJC-accredited facility
• Hospital privileges required; credentialing typically takes 30–60 days
• Self-query NPDB report dated within 30 days required at presentation

Primary duties

• Assist in cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries
• Perform morning rounds and write/share post-operative notes with surgeons
• Staff follow-up clinic (Tue/Thu afternoons), seeing up to 6 patients
• Evaluate urgent patient issues as needed outside scheduled clinic times
• Participate in night-call coverage with minimal callbacks
