Locum Tenens Orthopedic Surgeon — Fellowship-Trained, Call-Only (24-hr) in Waterloo, IA; Travel & Malpractice Covered

We’re seeking a board-certified orthopedic surgeon for short-term locum coverage in Waterloo, IA, providing inpatient and call-only services. Shifts are 24-hour on-call (0700–0700). Travel, lodging, and malpractice insurance are provided.

Coverage dates:

• Sep 14–28, 2026
• Nov 6–9, 2026
• Dec 14–28, 2026

What the role looks like:

• Provide on-call inpatient coverage for both Waterloo and Cedar Falls Medical Centers.
• Respond to any call that comes into the facility (this is required).
• Admit, evaluate, diagnose, treat, and consult on orthopedic patients of all ages.
• Perform surgical management for trauma, infections, tumors, degenerative disease, and other musculoskeletal conditions involving the spine, hands, feet, knee, hip, shoulder, and elbow.
• Assess and stabilize patients in emergent situations and determine appropriate disposition; may provide ICU care per unit policy.

Patient and volume details:

• All ages accepted
• Average daily volume: 10–20 patients
• Case mix includes orthopedic trauma, spine, hand, foot, knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, etc.

Facility and support:

• Level III trauma center
• EMR: Epic Enterprise
• Support team includes 4 Advanced Practice Providers

Requirements:

• Board certified in Orthopedic Surgery
• Fellowship trained and experienced
• Active Iowa medical license or participation in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC)
• Clean malpractice and background history; Self-Query NPDB report required
• Must be able to cover all three scheduled blocks
