Locums General Surgeon — 24‑hr Call Coverage, Short‑Term Aug 3–4, Newport News (Epic)

We’re looking for a board-certified General Surgeon to cover 24-hour in-hospital call in Newport News, VA for a short, focused assignment on August 3–4, 2026. This is a great fit for a surgeon who is comfortable managing the full spectrum of acute general surgery in a hospital setting and who can step in for a two-day stint.

Assignment details

• Dates: August 3 and 4, 2026 (single short-term engagement)
• Schedule: 24-hour call coverage
• Weekend coverage: not required beyond the specified dates
• Practice setting: hospital (Epic EMR)

What you’ll be doing

• Provide 24-hour general surgery call coverage and respond to emergency consults and admissions
• Evaluate, manage, and admit acute general surgery patients
• Perform urgent and emergent general surgical procedures as needed
• Round on hospitalized surgical patients and manage postoperative care
• Collaborate closely with emergency medicine, hospitalists, anesthesia, and nursing to ensure safe, timely care
• Complete accurate documentation in Epic in a timely manner

Scope of practice

• Full-spectrum general surgery call (routine general surgery procedures and clinical responsibilities)
• No bariatric call or bariatric patient coverage required

Qualifications

• Board certified in General Surgery
• Active, unrestricted Virginia medical license
• Current ACLS certification
• DEA registration and eligibility for hospital credentialing and privileges
