Job Description
A well-established Massachusetts healthcare system seeks a Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Ophthalmologist with pediatric expertise to provide adult and pediatric weekend on-call coverage. This is a 100% onsite, weekend call role with no scheduled clinic responsibilities.
Schedule
- Coverage: 2 weekends per month
- Shift: Friday 4:00 PM – Monday 6:00 AM
- Coverage period: August 2026 – September 2027, with potential extension
Clinical scope and practice details
- 100% onsite weekend call; no daytime clinic duties
- Adult and pediatric patient population
- Resident support available
- No expectation of major trauma team coverage
- Variable call volume; typically returning to the hospital about once per day on weekends, with roughly a 30% chance of operative cases
Typical responsibilities and procedures
- Evaluation and management of acute ocular conditions for adults and children, including:
- Foreign body removal (anterior segment)
- Slit-lamp examination and tonometry
- Dilated fundus exam for acute vision changes
- Management of corneal abrasions and infections
- Eyelid laceration repair and drainage of eyelid abscesses
- Assessment and stabilization of suspected globe injuries
- Operative management as required for emergent cases
Qualifications
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Ophthalmology; pediatric experience or fellowship preferred
- Active DEA registration if required
- Massachusetts medical license preferred; exceptional candidates willing to obtain licensure will be considered
