Job Description

We’re looking for a Board-Certified or Board-Eligible psychiatrist to join the team in Memphis, TN to provide onsite inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care for Veterans at a VA facility. You’ll deliver evidence-based, high-quality treatment across inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and residential programs, working closely with VA-employed mental health staff. All services are provided onsite and must be documented to meet VA policies and clinic performance metrics.

Schedule & on-call expectations

  • Locums opportunities available for part-time and full-time shifts.
  • Typical onsite clinic hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM (inpatient psychiatry coverage through 5:00 PM).
  • Weekend coverage as scheduled: Saturday–Sunday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM.
  • On-call coverage required whenever clinics are closed (evenings, nights, weekends, holidays).
  • Must be reachable by phone within 15 minutes and able to arrive onsite within 60 minutes.
  • Provide after-hours phone consultation to support VA residents and physicians.

Primary responsibilities
Inpatient care

  • Admit, evaluate, develop treatment plans, manage medications, and complete discharges for inpatient psychiatry units.
  • Collaborate with VA mental health staff and ensure timely, accurate medical record documentation.

Outpatient care

  • Evaluate new referrals, manage care for Veterans with severe mental illness, complete consults/e-consults, and provide post-discharge follow-up.
  • Maintain approximately 6–6.5 bookable patient hours per day.

Clinic and residential programs

  • Provide psychiatric care in general mental health and specialty clinics, including PRRC, MHICM, PTSD programs, and RRTP.
  • Conduct patient exams, interpret clinical reports, and keep to scheduled clinic times.

Peer review and administrative duties

  • Participate in peer reviews, case assessments, and quality reviews as needed.
  • Attend staff meetings and complete required administrative tasks (about 5% of time).

On-call responsibilities (summary)

  • Deliver on-call coverage whenever clinics are closed.
  • Be available by phone within 15 minutes and able to be onsite within 60 minutes.
  • Offer phone consultation support to VA residents and physicians.

Qualifications

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry (ABPN).
  • Valid U.S. medical license (any state).
  • BLS required; ACLS preferred.
