Summary:

Assists the professional nursing staff by performing duties in caring for hospitalized patients under the direct supervision of the professional nurse.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews information on the patient record.
  • Identifies and documents physiological needs of the patient after conference with the RN.
  • Discusses psychosocial needs of the patient with the RN.
  • Reviews and revises the plan of care of assigned patients.
  • Participates in patient care and planning with the RN.
  • Plans care to be given setting priorities and delivering in an organized manner.
  • Notifies RN of any change in patient status and response to treatments.
  • Demonstrates effective knowledge and accuracy in the administration of medications.
  • Performs various Point of Care testing procedures.
  • Documents the effectiveness of nursing care given.
  • Identifies areas of weakness and formulates objectives to improve self.
  • Reports deficiencies as observed to improve nursing care.
  • Initiates appropriate charges and utilizes supplies efficiently. 
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship with medical staff that promotes patient well-being.
  • Responds willingly to requests for help from coworkers.
  • Arrives on duty promptly.
  • Adheres to mealtime and break schedules.
  • Participates in problem-solving activities.
  • Incorporates patient care to assure that patients receive scheduled treatments and tests. 
  • Respects policies and procedures of department/unit.
  • Maintains harmonious working relations with other departments.
  • Documents growth-producing professional efforts.
  • Attains continuing education hours to maintain licensure.
  • Performs delegated nursing procedures after instruction and certification.
  • Maintains current CPR certification and informs Nurse Manager

Requirements:

Education: 

  • Graduate from an accredited school of practical nursing. 

Experience:

  • Six months of hospital experience required.
  • Must be able to read, speak and write English fluently. 

Certifications, Registrations, or Licenses:

  • Current New Mexico LPN license required. 
  • BLS Certification required or must be obtained within 2 weeks of hire date. All other required certifications must be obtained within 6 months of hire date. (See Required Department Certification List detailed on the last page of this document.) 
  • Must be able to pass LPN skills competency checklist applicable to area. 
  • LPN IV Therapy Certification preferred.
