Summary:

Plans, directs, organizes, maintains, and oversees the daily operation of the Laboratory Department in accordance with accepted standards and practices to meet the needs of the patients and hospital.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes, directs, controls and oversees daily activities of the Laboratory Departments, Chemistry and Hematology, to assure smooth, efficient and productive operations and quality patient care. Effectively prioritizes needs. Responds to and resolves all Laboratory technical problems as available. 
  • Performs duties of a CLS. Maintains competency at all times.
  • Selects, trains/orients, and assigns Laboratory staff, either directly or through lead technologists.
  • Assists the Laboratory Director in developing standards of performance and conducts job performance evaluations
  • Develops section goals and objectives, supportive of departmental and hospital goals. Establishes and implements policies and procedures for productive Laboratory operation.
  • Directs, prepares, develops and monitors relevant productivity standards and periodic management reports for the section. Assures departmental schedules maintain adequate staffing levels and are posted in a timely manner
  • Assists in developing and recommending the Laboratory operating budget and ensures that the section operates within budget.
  • Evaluates, through research and development, new procedures and instrumentation. Updates all procedures and instrumentation as needed, on an ongoing basis
  • Oversees that adequate equipment and supplies for efficient Laboratory operation and uninterrupted service to patients.
  • Oversees development and adheres to quality control, quality assurance, and continuing education for the section
  • Assures all accreditation agency requirements are met to assure quality patient care. To include the enforcement of all Standards of accreditation and Laboratory polices
  • Directs documentation, establishes record system, and maintains the oversight of all Laboratory records, reports, statistics, logs and files To assure quality patient care
  • Continuously practices and enforces standard precautions according to hospital and departmental procedures
  • Reviews applications to the career ladder and makes recommendations to the Laboratory Director

Requirements:

Education/Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science of Medical Technology required, completion of a recognized program.
  • Supervisory, teaching, and effective communication skills. Read and write English. Laboratory instrumentation operation skills required.

Experience

  • Minimum four years in a clinical laboratory as a CLS, MT. Two years Supervisory experience required.

Certification/Licenses 

  • CLS (NCA), MT (ASCP) or equivalent certification required. Must meet CLIA ‘88 requirements for performing high complexity testing as defined in the Federal Register, Vol. 57; #40, Subpart 493.1489.
  • Supervisory, teaching, effective communication skills. Read and write English. Laboratory instrumentation operation skills required.
