Summary:

Under the direction of the nurse, performs basic patient care related tasks that contributes to the maintenance of a safe and comfortable patient environment. 

Responsibilities:

  • Reports pertinent information such as changes in a patient’s physical or mental status to the nurse in a timely fashion.
  • Accurately obtains (using manual or electronic device) and records patient vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, respiration, pulse and weight.
  • Provides personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, transferring, and ambulating.
  • Maintains patient records and charts to ensure an accurate record of the patient's medical treatment.
  • Carries out procedures according to standards; reports pertinent observations to nurse.
  • Responds appropriately and according to instruction during emergency situations.
  • Ensures the safety of all patients and has safety devices in use when needed and protects patient from injury.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to patient comfort, privacy and confidentiality.
  • Follows universal precautions to prevent the spread of disease or infection and disposes of infectious waste appropriately.
  • Has basic knowledge of and adheres to patient safety goals.
  • Protects patients from injury and infection. 
  • Cleans specified equipment and areas as assigned; removes trash and used equipment.
  • Maintains comfortable, clean, and uncluttered environment both in the patient’s room and on the unit.
  • Anticipates and coordinates workload to assure that routines and supplies are maintained to expedite patient care.
  • Attends educational in-services and staff meetings on a regular basis.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Acts in the capacity of Sitter as required:
    • Assists with patient’s activities of daily living (e.g. feeding, bathing, and ambulating)
    • Responsible for vital signs, intake and output
    • Reports any pertinent changes to primary nurse as needed and at least once per shift to the Charge Nurse of the unit.
    • Records activities on the sitter documentation form.
    • Remains with the patient during all activities. When the patient is in the bathroom, will remain outside the bathroom with the door slightly ajar.

  • Complies and adheres to all St. Vincent Hospital policies.
  • Maintains positive attendance and communicates in advance, any absence from work. 
  • Adheres to all patient and environmental safety policies and procedures.

Job Requirements:

Education/Skills

  • High school graduate or equivalent. 
  • Successful completion of Nursing Assistant course within one year.
  • Must be able to pass skills competency checklist as required by each unit. 
  • Must be able to read, speak and write English fluently.

Experience

  • Previous experience as a Nurse Assistant in a hospital setting preferred
  • Six months in a healthcare related field preferred.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • BLS certification required. 
  • Specialty certifications as required by each unit.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to handle emergency/crisis situations, prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. 
  • Has knowledge of and uses good body mechanics. 
  • Frequently lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients or equipment. 
  • Hearing and visual acuity within normal limits. 
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination required.

In accordance with the CHRISTUS Health License, Certification and Registration Verification Policy, all Associates are required to obtain the required certifications for their respective positions within the designated time frame.
