Join a busy community emergency department in St. Johns, MI, as a locum tenens Emergency Medicine physician covering varied 12-hour day and night shifts. Coverage begins July 1, 2026 and is ongoing, with an expected schedule of about eight shifts per month (primarily nights). Specific shifts to be filled include a mix of 7a–7p and 7p–7a dates across July and August—examples: Jul 20, 25 (7p–7a), 26 (TBD), and Aug 10, 16, 17, 24, 29, 31.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide emergency medical care in the ED and respond to hospital codes as needed.
  • Supervise one APP during overlapping hours (APP coverage 11a–11p).
  • Interpret EKGs (cardiology provides final review).
  • Stabilize OB patients for transfer to Lansing Labor & Delivery when required.
  • Coordinate with admitting physicians for inpatient admissions (ED physicians do not perform admissions).

Patient and department snapshot

  • Average daily ED volume: 32–50 patients (annual ~13,800).
  • ED handles ~55% of hospital admissions; ~6.4% of ED patients are admitted.
  • Typical patient transfers: seven or fewer.
  • ED bed count: 10; Trauma Level IV.
  • On-site 24-hour services: radiology, lab, blood bank, OR, anesthesia.
  • Specialty backup: radiology, critical care, cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, neurology, urology, psychiatry.

Logistics and support

  • EMR: Epic.
  • Support staff: one APP (11a–11p) and available specialty backup as listed.
  • Malpractice coverage provided; travel and lodging covered.

Requirements

  • Board certified (ABEM or AOBEM).
  • Active full Michigan medical license required.
  • ACLS and ATLS certifications.
  • Prior experience in a community ED setting and supervising APPs.
  • NPDB report pulled within 30 days of start.

This is clinical-only inpatient ED coverage provided on a locum basis to supplement staffing needs.
