Locum Night Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant - Cardiothoracic Surgery, Rapid City SD

We’re looking for a Locums Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join a collaborative Cardiothoracic Surgery team in Rapid City, South Dakota. This is a night-shift role that blends professional autonomy with strong physician support, caring for post-operative cardiac and thoracic surgery patients in both the ICU and on the inpatient wards.

Schedule

• Night shift: 5:00 PM - 6:30 AM
• 168 shifts annually (about 14 shifts per month)

What you’ll do

• Provide overnight care for 3-6 critically ill post-op cardiac patients in the ICU.
• Manage care for 10-15 cardiothoracic surgery inpatients on the ward each night.
• Perform thorough assessments and continuous monitoring, responding quickly to clinical changes and initiating appropriate interventions.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, labs, and imaging; develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with surgeons and intensivists.
• Perform procedures and clinical interventions within your scope of practice and hospital privileges.
• Communicate clearly with nursing staff, physicians, and the multidisciplinary team.
• Document accurately and promptly in the electronic medical record and ensure smooth handoffs to the daytime team.

What we’re looking for

• Graduate of an accredited NP or PA program.
• Current or eligible licensure in South Dakota.
• National certification (NP) or NCCPA certification (PA).
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
• Prior ICU, critical care, cardiac, or acute care experience.

Preferred experience

• Cardiothoracic surgery background.
• Critical care or cardiovascular ICU experience.
• Hands-on experience managing post-operative cardiac surgery patients.
