Night-Shift Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant - Cardiothoracic/Cardiac Surgery (Rapid City)

Join a collaborative cardiothoracic surgery team in Rapid City, South Dakota, as an experienced Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant working night shifts. This role offers substantial clinical autonomy with robust physician support while caring for post-operative cardiac and thoracic surgery patients in both the ICU and the hospital wards.

Schedule

• Night shift, 5:00 PM - 6:30 AM
• 168 shifts annually (about 14 shifts per month)
• Predictable scheduling that allows two weeks off every month

What you’ll do

• Provide overnight care for 3-6 critically ill post-operative cardiac patients in the ICU and manage 10-15 cardiothoracic surgery inpatients on the wards.
• Perform comprehensive assessments, ongoing monitoring, and timely interventions for changes in patient condition.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, labs, and imaging; develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with surgeons and intensivists.
• Perform procedures and clinical interventions within your scope and hospital privileges.
• Communicate clearly with nurses, physicians, and the multidisciplinary team and ensure accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
• Facilitate smooth handoffs to the daytime care team.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited NP or PA program
• Current or eligible for South Dakota NP or PA licensure
• National certification (NP) or NCCPA certification (PA)
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications
• Previous ICU, critical care, cardiac, or acute care experience

Preferred experience

• Cardiothoracic surgery background
• Critical care or cardiovascular ICU experience
• Prior management of post-operative cardiac surgery patients
