What the role looks like

  • Regular first-assist opportunities in the OR and participation in a dedicated orthopedic trauma follow-up clinic.
  • Predictable annual schedule that supports a strong work–life balance.

Schedule

  • 164 twelve-hour shifts per year with 24/7 team coverage.
  • Typical shifts are either 6:30 AM–6:30 PM or 6:30 PM–6:30 AM.

Primary responsibilities

  • Evaluate and manage orthopedic trauma patients in the ED and on the inpatient service.
  • Round daily on hospitalized orthopedic trauma patients and coordinate their care.

  • Provide fracture management, splinting, casting, wound care, postoperative care, and other procedures within your scope of practice.
  • Staff and manage a dedicated orthopedic trauma follow-up clinic.
  • Educate patients and families about treatment plans, recovery expectations, and injury prevention.
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation.

  • Upper and lower extremity fractures
  • Common hand injuries
  • Routine pediatric fractures
  • Other orthopedic trauma and emergency cases that require surgical and inpatient management

Who we’re looking for

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (or PA program).
  • Current or eligible South Dakota NP or PA licensure and national certification (NP or NCCPA for PAs).
  • Orthopedic trauma, ortho surgery, emergency medicine, or surgical experience is preferred but not required—new graduates with a strong interest in orthopedic trauma are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to patient-centered care.

Compensation and benefits

  • Competitive pay
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Annual CME stipend
